Geometric Harmony makes it debut in the March 2022 Issue #45 Make Modern Magazine.

Geometric Color Choices

For my wall hanging, I chose to do two different colored versions. The burgundy sashing & applique shapes represent Brain Aneursym awareness & the alternate choice in teal represents Ovarian Cancer awareness.

Moda Marbles is my go to favorite fabric. It’s doesn’t have the ‘flat ‘ appearance of a solid color and adds a subtle shadowing affect to its basic color.

The background fabric is Muslin Mates Vine White. Its tone on tone print adds a little interest when viewed up close, but appears to be plain when seen from a distance. The geometric shapes in the pattern uses 2 different Moda Marble colors, Teal , Goldenrod, and a Bella solid, black. Make Modern chose to feature the teal version of Geometric Harmony, but included the optional burgundy color wave in the article as well.

If you're not familiar with Make Modern, it's a magazine created by quilters for quilters with the added bonus of being digital.  Make Modern is published bi-monthly and comes with at least 10 patterns and with articles featuring interviews with quilters & designers from all over the world.  Other articles can include everything from quilting tips & tricks through to the latest in quilting books, fabrics and more.

Well.... It's finally here the big REVEAL.  It's a little outside the box for me, I'm a traditional sort of gal.  By adding more blocks to make a table topper or wall hanging, changes the appearance of the grid block.  It actually seems to disappear.  The larger square piece in the original grid appeared on the far right side.  By adding & changing the blocks around, the larger square is now symmetrical on my table topper.  If you would like to see photos of the table topper, please go to my blog page.  https://www.appliquesquiltsandmore.com/blog/quilt-block-remix-february-the-reveal-206679

GEOMETRIC HARMONY'S Magazine Preview

In August 2021, posted on Facebook was a request to submit a quilt pattern design to Make Modern magazine.  Normally, a traditional applique designer (leaning a little on the art side), I found myself debating as to whether or not this was something I could achieve.  Having a quilt published in a magazine has always been one of my goals.

After searching the internet for different types of abstract or geometric pictures for inspiration, I said “yes, I can do this!

Geometric Harmony will make its debut in Make Modern’s issue #45 coming out on March 11th.  I'm so excited to share with you my Geometric Harmony wall-hanging quilt pattern.  This pattern is special for several reasons: it’s my first pattern published in a magazine, I reached a long-time goal of mine, and it forced me to step outside of my usual style of quilts.  Stepping outside our comfort zone allows us to grow as quilters.

Geometric Harmony features 12" quilt blocks using applique.  It's based on simple construction of blocks, sashing, borders, and of course binding.  The quilt blocks are very versatile and can be arranged to make a table runner, tote bags, pillows, and more.

Various basic & some not so basic geometric shapes were used throughout my design.   What’s so unusual about this pattern is that two of the most common shapes - squares and rectangles don’t appear.   And to be totally honest, I didn’t even realize that until I started this blog.  But you can find circles, hexagons, triangles, pentagons, trapezoids & diamonds.  I prefer ‘diamonds’ more than the geometric term ‘rhombus’.  There are even shapes inside other shapes.

So, please pop back in a couple of days for an update and sneak peek at the fabric & color choices.

Quilt Block Remix - February Sneak Peak #1

My 'remix' design is coming along, slowly but surely. I've been trying different colors to put in the center, outer pieces, etc. So far, I'm liking this way. I still have to figure out how to get the block to work when it only needs one more row to it make 7x7. If it doesn't work out, it'll be back to the old drawing board to reconfigure. (Hope my fabric arrives soon).

Participants are asked to post 4 Instagram Posts:
Sneak Peek #1 - will post February 14th. an idea of how the block is progressing
Sneak Peek #2 - will post February 21st a little more detail of the block
The Reveal - will post February 28th and finally the actual block

Quilt Block Remix - February Fabric Pull

Designer's have gotten together with another fun filled challenge called Quilt Block Remix.

Each month a different block will be chosen and we have to explore different ways to "Remix" them.  So join the challenge to see what you can do with a 7x7 grid block.  it should be an easy block to do or try to REMIX as it's squares & HSTs.

These are the fabrics I am auditioning for my block, some will make it into the block, others will have to wait for another month.  This is the new linen-esque by Benartex.   The colors are in the teal family.  I haven't received the actual fabric as yet, so this is a digital photo.

Participants are asked to post 4 Instagram Posts:

Fabric Pull - will post on IG February 7th.  pictures with possible fabric choices for block
Sneak Peek #1 - will post   February 14th.  an idea of how the block is progressing
Sneak Peek #2 - will post   February 21st   a little more detail of the block

Wednesday, February 2, 2022

February is the month of LOVE.  It is also American Heart Month.  We have designed a couple of different heart shapes for you to create your own special & unique design for someone you love.

The templates are designed for raw edge applique, if you are going to do needle turn applique you will have to add 1/4” more fabric along the outer edges of the fabric when you are cutting.   This pattern was created to fit in a 12.5" unfinished block as required by Designer’s Awareness Block Challenge. Complimentary pattern & will be available throughout the month of the February, 2022..  After that you will be able to purchase a pattern on the website under the category “Patterns for Appliques”

Laser precut applique kits are available for purchase for a limited time only.

Patterns by Jen is announcing the 2022 Monthly Color Challenge.  This year the theme is "Spicy."  This is the 5th year for the Monthly Color Challenge. Blocks are available for free during the month. After the month has passed blocks are available for $1.

February's color is bay leaf.  The colors are Moda Marbles Christmas Green & Henry Glass folio light green.

Rather than make a four block table topper like I did for January's challenge, I thought I'd try something a little different by combining the 6"block & the 12" block to make a somewhat unusual table runner.   What are your thoughts?

For my complimentary FREE block, I chose to make a couple riding away in a car with cans tied behind because they were just married.  Because JUST MARRIED was tooooo large to put on the license plate, LOVE was used instead.

You can get your FREE pattern here

We are also offering a laser precut applique kit.  The kit comes with everything precut and your choice of with fusible backing or without*.   Why cut out all those little pieces when you can get a kit with them already precut.

(*) NOTE: If you're purchasing a applique kit without fusible backing to use the needle turn method, your pieces will be smaller.

If you would like to get a precut applique kit, you can find it  HERE
Don't delay, SHOP today, time is LIMITED.

The REVEAL - Ohio Star Remix Block Challenge.  It was definitely a lot of fun trying various ways to 'remix' the Ohio Star block.

First, I started with a plain simple Ohio Star Block, then added another, then another.  So it became a star within a star within a star.  But that didn't seem 'remixed' enough.  What could be done by thinking outside of the box (star) so to speak?  The answer was "Why not fracture it?"  Has it been done before? I'm not sure... I've never seen one.  Have you?  and NOW the reveal....... Oh but wait a minute !!!   First... I'd like to share a little bit of the 'insider' thoughts about my creation.

WELL.... Here it is!   Here's is the BIG REVEAL - my "Fractured" Ohio Star Block.   Both sets of photos are digital. First photo -- patriotic colors.  The second group illustrates the fabric choices from Week 1.
